brown hare

portrait of a brown hare
The brown hare is widespread across Europe. Due to its fur colour it is a master of disguise. In addition, the brown hare has exceptional hearing. It is a rather shy animal, mostly nocturnal and indivduals usually live by themselves. In case of danger the brown hare initially covers on the ground – then it jumpes up abruptly and races away. Herby, it is an excellent jumper, displaying a unique flight–technique by abruptly changing course and therby trying to outdistance its predators. Brown hares are able to jump up to 2 m and achieve speeds up to astonishing 80km/h.
Today brown hares are endangered due to intensive agriculture and farming as well as the fragmentation of landscapes due to roads and other artificial structures. Therefore, they have less and less habitat left to use. I created this drawing after a tour through the fields where I could observe a few brown hares and their characteristic flight response.
