Forest dung beetles represent ecosystem engineers by keeping our forests clean. They play a vital role in the decomposition and reutilization of organic material, as through their activities nutrient cycles and soil fertility is improved. Hence, these beetles are important bioindicators of a healthy forest ecosystem.
Like so many other species, forest dung beetles are at risk due to habitat loss, use of pesticides and extreme weather events.

Luckily I have had the chance to observe forest dung beetles and their activities many times while walking in the woods. So I decided to draw this one. On the one hand I wanted to emphasize the importance of forest dung beetles in healthy ecosystems and on the other hand, it was quite a challenge for me to capture the characteristic metallic shine of the beetle’s body using colour pencils.
