lynx

colour pencil drawing showing the head of a lynx

portrait of a lynx

The lynx is the biggest wild cat in Europe. It has long hind legs, a short tail, a broad short head and triangular ears with black tufts at the tips. Fully-grown lynx do not have any natural enemies making them apex predators themselves. Lynx ambush their prey and attack by powerful leaps – in doing so they can jump as far as 7 m. Lynx are solitary and inhabit vast areas of connected woodlands, which are getting rare.

In Europe lynx were being hunted for a long time due to preying on farmed animals and livestock. Today there are several attempts and programmes for reintroduction of the lynx into the wild. I created this drawing after a presentation of a conservation programme to bring the lynx back to Scotland.
