Squirrels are distributed almost all over Europe. Apart from being present in deciduous woodland and mixed forests, they have also settled in many urban areas and are often present near humans in gardens and parks. Squirrels have a light-red to dark-brown or black fur colour, long tufts of fur on the tip of their ears and a bushy tail, which is almost as long as the animal itself. Their physique is perfectly adapted to living and climbing in trees.

Due to their rather cute appearance and foolhardy climbing techniques squirrels are very popular. However, actual population sizes are difficult to measure as squirrels have a lot of predators on the one hand, as well as being subject to the availability of enough food supplies on the other hand. It is relatively easy to observe squirrels, as some individuals are used to the presence of and even feeding by humans. This drawing shows a squirrel holding a nut.
