The sea otter

The sea otter (Enhydra lutris) is far more than just a charming face in the water. It is a climate protector on four paws. By eating sea urchins, it safeguards the vast kelp forests that supply our oceans with oxygen and absorb CO₂. Without the sea otter, these underwater forests would disappear.

Especially moving is its family life: the sea otter mother raises her pup alone and entirely in the water. For hours she carries it on her belly, grooms its fur so it stays warm and buoyant, and often wraps it in kelp to keep it from drifting away while she hunts.

Yet this fragile balance is under threat. When humans create food competition through overfishing or pollute the seas, we are not just harming a “fish eater” — we are destroying the nursery of a keystone species. True marine conservation means keeping the ocean clean and safe enough that an otter mother can raise her pup fearlessly on the waves.
