Upright common hamster

drawing of a common hamster standing in a meadow

portrait of a common hamster

The common hamster is the only species of hamster in Europe that is found in the wild. Like all species of hamsters they are able to stretch their cheeks in order to fill them up with seeds and grains which are then transported to a secret and secure storage place. Common hamsters look rather cute, but they can also display a very aggressive behaviour by uplifting themselves on the hind legs thereby growling and hissing to drive off potential predators.

The common hamster is critically endangered and it can be discribed as a victim to modern agriculture and farming. Climate change and the adjustment from spring grain to winter grain leads to early harvest times which robs the common hamster of vital covering. The use of pesticides and highly efficient modern machines in agriculture takes away its' food supplies and leaves it to starve. I created this drawing after a visit to a famous cemetery in Vienna where common hamsters have found a kind of refuge to live and breed and where it is still easy to observe this fascinating animals.
